For us, August means that once again the skies over Ventura County will be alive with the sights and sounds of the Camarillo Air Show. This show is always really special for us as it gives us another opportunity to hang out with our friends from the American Aeronautical Foundation (AAF) and our favorite B-25, Executive Sweet. Camarillo is our home field and is also a great chance for anyone with the desire and a few extra bucks to get an opportunity to fly aboard the B-25.
This year the AAF had a really great show set up complete with a VIP chalet, show cars, models posing for photos with show-goers, collector motorcycles, tours of the C-47 and lots more. If you missed out on all the fun, be sure to check them out next year, they are on the east end of the show line, just beyond the CAF hanger.
Over the past couple of years, the Camarillo show has really been growing. This year however things seemed to have scaled back a bit, probably a by-product of a sluggish economy. There were not as many static displays or vendors, but attendance was good and there was a great selection of warbirds on hand as well as an F-18C Hornet, F/A-18E Super Hornet and even the Bloodhounds S-3B Viking with its special Centennial of Naval Aviation paint scheme. Many show-goers didn't get the opportunity to see the S-3 as it was parked way down the airfield somewhere between the AAF and the control tower. We were really hoping it would be part of the flying, but no such luck.
The show kicked off with a heritage flight that included the F/A-18E, F6F Hellcat and F8F Bearcat, followed by a very brief Super Hornet demo. Rob Harris, better known as the Tumbling Bear was on hand to provide a little aerobatic entertainment and after a long wait the warbirds were the highlight of the afternoon's flying.
As always we had a great time and can hardly wait until next year. Hope to see you there!
