Nellis Air Force Base and another great air show weekend. We make it out to a lot of great air shows each year, but somehow, even as it has gotten a bit smaller the past couple years, the Nellis show remains right up at the top of my list of favorites. The clear skies are absolutely great for photography and flying. As you may have guessed from the shot above, not only was I taking photographs this year, but I even got to take to the sky and participate in the show aboard the AAF's B-25J, Executive Sweet.
Take a good look at the image above and you will notice that our pilot John Garlinger really had the 25 banking hard and coming in nice and hot. As I set up for this shot from my perch in the nose of the airplane, I could feel the arches of my feet flattening out under the added weight of the approximately 2G turn. From here we came in low and fast over the main runway and popped up quickly for our simulated "Doolittle Raid" style bomb drop! What an absolute blast... no pun intended.
As you will see in our galleries, the show had many of the great aircraft you have come to expect at Nellis, like the F-22, the A-10, the QF-4E Phantoms, F-86 Sabre, the always crowd pleasing Thunderbirds and their F-16s, and so many more. One thing that really shocked us though was how lightly attended the show was this year. While it made it a real joy to move around, it was strange to have so few people as compared to previous years.
Bottom line... great show as always, if you have never been then you owe it to yourself to make it out and if you have then you already know what I mean.
Enjoy the shots... we'll see you on the flightline! |
