We arrived early Friday morning to more fog than I think I have ever seen at Miramar. As we entered the base, the flightline, hangers and just about everything else was lost in the fog, never a good thing at an air show. Fortunately, true to the crazy weather we have come to expect from Miramar the skies cleared shortly after noon allowing for full shows from both the Canadian Snowbirds and the United States Navy’s own Blue Angels.
One thing about moist skies is aircraft almost seem to explode with vapor engulfing the wings and fuselage as they literally squeeze the moisture from the air around them. You will notice a great many of our shots are really spectacular with large amounts of white vapor present. Don’t miss our shots of the F-22 Raptor, they almost appear as though waves of water are flooding the top of the airplane… really spectacular!
Missing from the Friday show due to the weather was the MAGTF (Marine Air-Ground Task Force). If you have yet to see the MAGTF, it is a great demonstration of USMC manpower, airpower and armor and is unlike anything we have ever seen at another air show. You can see images of the MAGTF in any of our galleries from past years at Miramar as well as images from Saturday’s show in Lyonel Robinson’s gallery.
Other performers included the Viper West F-16 Demo Team from Hill, AFB, the F-22 Raptor Demo Team, the AV-8B Harrier, Sean D. Tucker in his newly redesigned Oracle Challenger and of course the FA-18F Super Hornet.
The static displays brought out a few unique birds as well, in our galleries for the first time is the Eurofighter Typhoon. Two English examples of the aircraft were present and on display and were a real treat for all to see.
You will also want to take a look at our shots of the new paint scheme on the VFA-122 Flying Eagles F/A-18F Super Hornet. This special blue digital camo paint job was done to commemorate the 100th anniversary of U.S. Naval Aviation.
As always, the Snowbirds put on a great show and give a truly unique performance akin to an aerial ballet. It is awesome to see all 9 aircraft in formation together.
Finally, we were treated to the always impressive Blue Angels, if the Snowbirds are an aerial ballet, then the blues are Miramar’s own airborne rock concert! High speed, close formation flying like only they can do and as always… the crowd loves it!
Thanks for stopping by, enjoy the photos and be sure to come out and see us at an air show near you.
